2021 Monthly Award Recipients

January

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for January is Jasmine Shakeshaft for Athletics.

In January, Jasmine broke the U17 girls Bowral Little Athletics triple jump record. She hopped, stepped and jumped an incredible 10.86 metres into the record books. Jasmine, a Year 11 student at Chevalier College, had seven months away from the runway in 2020 due to a skiing injury but Katie Blake, Secretary of Bowral Little Athletics said “her patience and determination through her recovery period paid off and her athletics future is looking bright again “. 

 The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for January is Steven Baines for Cricket.

Scoring a century is a milestone for cricketers worldwide and, on the 17th January 2021, Steven reached that goal during a T20 match playing for the Hilltop Kookaburra Cricket Club. His recent move to join the Kookaburra’s has revitalised his love for the game and as captain of the T20 side he was determined to lead by example. He did just that securing the win over Robertson. Steven also captained the Kookaburra’s 3rd grade side in the HDCA competition. He has played cricket since primary and looks forward to many more years at the crease.

February

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for February is Lucas Hill for Athletics.

In February, Lucas broke the U9 boys 800 metre record which was set twelve years ago. He also competed in four events at the Region 4 Little Athletics State qualifying event in Wagga Wagga and placed first in the 70 metre sprint, 100 metre sprint and 60 metre hurdles and second in the 200 metre sprint. These excellent results qualified Lucas to compete at the Little Athletics State Championships in March. To round out a fabulous debut he helped the 4 x 10 metre relay team to a fourth place.

The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for February is Kevin O’Meley for Cycling.

On February 4th, Kevin and his pilot Richard Vollebregt competed in the National Individual Time Trial MB (Men Blind) classification (Tandem) championships which was 23 kilometres on the Federation University course consisting of three laps of a 7.6km circuit. They finished just 2.8 seconds in front of second place to win the gold medal. Then, on the 6th February, the duo competed in the National Road Race MB (Men Blind) classification (Tandem) event. This was a 50 kilometre race – five laps of the 10 kilometre Victorian Buniningyong course. In an exciting race they finished in bronze position just 20 seconds behind first and second place.

March

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for March is Holly Rae for Athletics.

After a disrupted 2020 season due to COVID 19 Holly has had an exceptional start to 2021. Holly competed at the 2021 NSW Junior Athletics Championships over the weekend of the 12th – 14th March which was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. With a sizzling preliminary heat time of 12.55 seconds in the U15 100 metre sprint, she went on to be crowned State Champion with a time of 12.57 seconds.

The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for March is Lachlan Mineeff for  Motor Sports.

It seems eighteen year old Lachlan Mineeff is not afraid of change. He first came to the attention of the committee of the Berrima District Sports Awards as a sixteen year old. He had just moved from racing in the NSW Formula Ford Series to winning two rounds of the Australian National Formula Ford series. He then competed in the Bathurst 6 Hour and he and his co-driver became the youngest combination to ever finish a major endurance race at the iconic circuit. This year, Lachlan made his TRC debut. Despite never driving in the Volkswagen Golf TCR car prior to racing on Phillip Island in March, Lachlan finished in 9th place.

April

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for April is Jorgi Webb for Rugby League.

Sixteen-year-old Jorgi is heading into the history books of Moss Vale High School as being their first female rugby league representative. After playing only a handful of games in primary school but, with plenty of practice in the backyard with older brothers, Jorgi tried out for, and made the South Coast team. After a sensational match against Riverina, she was then selected in the Southern NSW Representative team which will contest the Combined High School (CHS) State Titles in August. The talented Year 11 student is also an accomplished football player. Pulling on the boots at just 5 years of age, Jorgi currently plays with Macarthur Rams in the NPL Division 1 competition.

The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for April is Anneliese Wansey for Equestrian.

Anneleise and her 10-year-old chestnut gelding Kolora Stud St Patrick competed in the show jumping at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The duo recorded two third placings in the preliminary round and were one of ten combinations called back for Round 2. In a tightly contested competition, Anneleise Wansey and Kolora Stud St Patrick completed the only double clear which saw Anneleise placing first in the Young Rider Grand Prix and was named the most successful Young Rider at the show.

The Junior Monthly Award Recipients for May are Patrick Reid for Skeet Shooting and Michelle Di Natale for Golf.

The Berrima District Sports Awards had a double celebration in May 2021 as we had two junior recipients of the monthly award. Patrick Reid has gained a position in the Australian Junior Shooting team. Competing in six events at the Skeet Nationals, he scored 23/35 in the Shoulder to Shoulder State Team event and was the Top Junior Shooter, a 50/50 in the 50 target handicap, a 90/100 in the 100 target 20 gauge, 95/100 in the 100 target Commonwealth Championship, 88/100 in the 100 target National Skeet Championship and 83/100 in the 100 target Skeet Doubles.

Co-recipient Michelle Di Natale claimed first place in the All Schools Golf Championships. Competing in the Australian Juniors Amateur Championships she placed first in the U16 girls’ event and 3rd overall.

The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for May is Georgia Genner for Basketball.

Georgia played in the Australian U20 Basketball Championships from 3-5 May in Mackay as member of the NSW Blues Team. They defeated Victoria in the Grand final. Georgia, a Year 12 Chevalier College student, also represented the Open Combined Independent Schools (CIS) basketball team in the Australian All Schools Tri Series against CHS (Combined High Schools) and CCS (Combined Catholic Schools).

June

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for June is Lucy Nash for Hockey.

Lucy, who is in Year 10, was selected in the NSW Combined High Schools State U16 hockey team. The team will play in aa All Schools Tri Series against CHS (Combined High Schools) and CCS (Combined Catholic Schools) in Newcastle in August.

The Senior Monthly Award Recipient for June is Riley Tozer for XC Running.

Riley, a Year 12 student at Moss Vale High School placed first in the Regional 18 years boys cross country event and qualified for the State Championships.

July

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for July is Connor Miller for Hockey.

Connor, accompanying Southern Highlands Hockey Association teams, umpired at both the U15 Girls and U15 Boys State Hockey Championships. Due to his competency and professionalism, he was selected to officiate two final matches.

The Junior Monthly Award Recipient for July is Chris Shea for Rugby League.

Chris won a Regional Volunteers Award from NSW Rugby League. Chris was instrumental in merging three great local junior clubs – Bowral, Moss Vale and Robertson into one super club – the Southern Highlands Storm.
